T31 A very rare “Mizusashi” for the Japanese tea ceremony, Chongzhen, Ming Dynasty

SKU: T31 Category:

Description

Description:   Chinese porcelain big lidded pot, shaped as a pumpkin. It is a fresh water container called Mizusashi by the Japanese, being a vessel for their tea ceremony. The decoration is divided in two halves, to accomplish the Japanese taste. The potting has several flaws, which too were purposely made for suiting the taste of the final destination. These pots are almost unknown in China, having been exclusively made for export, in a short period. The existing ones can be divided in two types: the Chinese ones, of the late Ming period, which are very rare, and the Japanese ones, which are of highest quality, of Shonzui type, and made in the 19th century.

Dating:  17th century, Chongzhen, Ming dynasty.

Size:  24 cm diameter

Provenance:  Antiquarian market
