Description:  Chinese snuff bottle of hexagonal baluster shape, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a classic Ming style Lotus scroll, the blossoms alternately upright and downright, enclosed by undulating stems.

Mark:  No marks

Dating:  early 19th century

Material:  Porcelain, glazed inside.

Size:  70 mm high

Stopper:  Amber stopper with glass red collar and silver spoon

Provenance:  Antiquarian market

References:  An identical is illustrated in Robert Kleiner’s book “In search of a Dragon, Underglaze Blue and White porcelain in the collection of Joseph Baruch Silver”, at page 124.

Notes:  In commenting the reference bottle, Robert Kleiner says that “according to the great pioneering collector of blue and white snuff bottles John Ault, ….. a single dot between the trefoils (those around the neck) is typical of the Daoguang period (see Journal of the I.C.S.B.S., Autumn 1990, pag. 10).
