Description
Description: Chinese Dehua figure of a seated Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy. The figure, of creamy color, is represented seated with right hand resting on her raised knee with exposed foot, wearing long flowing robes and a jewelled necklace, the hairwork finely detailed. There is a square “He Chaozong” mark and a double gourd “Dehua”mark on the back. There is an old sticker on the base of a shop from Skelmorlie, Ayrshire, Scotland. The strange title is because, when bought, we found bits of paper pressed into the statue. They turned out to be three letters written by a French soldier at the Front (Aux Armées) , addressed to a woman (Ma petite femme chérie…) and dated 15 and 16 March, 1916. See last pictures.
Dating: 18th century
