Description
Description: Chinese amber color glass snuff bottle of round flattened form. This too, like the snuff bottle G45, could easily be inadequately judged by a quick, inappropriate evaluation, while actually it is a 18th century bottle, and well crafted. The imitation of amber is not only relying on the color; the physical properties too are contributing to that. In fact, the forming of the bottle was made in such way for giving to the handler the same feeling as if he were handling an amber bottle. This has been achieved through the thinning of the glass. In fact, its weight is less than ¾ of the weight of the bottle G45, despite being the body of that bottle smaller than this one. The diameter of the body of this bottle is 51 mm, the one of that bottle is 48mm. By handling it, the lightness of this bottle is immediately perceived. A further trick that helped to keep the weight low, is that the side masks and the false foot was carved within the thickness of the glass. In other words, the overall shape of the bottle is a perfect circle (except the neck, of course) and there are no protruding parts, as usual for glass carved snuff bottles. This is well shown in the last two pictures by encircling the bodies of the two bottles. This is why we called this bottle “Faux amber” instead of the expected “Glass imitating amber”. The bottle had an intense use, and remnants of the snuff are inside. If collecting snuff bottles is, as we think, collecting real bottles, made in the proper period and intended for use, this and the G45 are well representing what is much collectable.
