Description
Description: Chinese red overlay over a transparent glass body snuff bottle of flattened pear shape. The red overlay is representing the same cricket on both sides of the bottle. All the transparent glass of the body has big cracks which are not a real damage; they are due to a glass disease, caused by an inherent chemical imbalance in the glass’s composition, usually an excess of alkali and not enough stabilizing calcium oxide, which makes it unstable and susceptible to moisture in the environment. This phenomenon can affect antique and modern glasses, but on snuff bottles is particularly seen on bottles of the late 19th century which are kept in South East Asia, where environmental humidity is high.
