Description
Description: A small snuff bottle of fine grainy burlwood, incised on the surface with three fishes on each side, swimming among water plants (Note: because of the very small size of the bottle, to see the carved fishes it is necessary to enlarge the pictures). The specie of the original tree is unknown, but it is a hardwood, probably Rosewood or Amboyna due to the reddish color. The bottle has a concave mouth.
Foot/base: Protruded rounded foot, recessed flat base
Mark:
Dating: 19th Century
Material: Burlwood of unknown fine grainy hardwood
Size: 41 mm high
Stopper: Matching burlwood stopper with bone spoon.
Provenance: Antiquarian market
References: In the last picture, see a burlwood bottle sold by Bonhams
Notes: In the footnotes of the last reference bottle is said that Chinese literati did like burlwood because its organic pattern is said to evoke clouds or rippling waters. It should be particularly true for this bottle, as it explains the reason for adding fishes and water plants.
