T37 A “Five Hares” bowl, Wanli, Ming Dynasty

SKU: T37 Category:

Description

Description:   Chinese porcelain big bowl with scalloped rim, with a dense decoration of hares, plants and birds divided on eight panels, plus an hare at the bottom. All the decoration on various types of patterned backgrounds. It is not clear if it could be a Shonzui bowl for the Japanese market, or meant for the Islamic market, being the decoration different from the standard Chinese styles.

Dating:  17th century, Wanli/Tianqi, Ming dynasty.

Size:  18.4 cm diameter

Provenance:  Antiquarian market. This bowl, together with the bowl T38 and the very fine plate T43 has been bought at an Antique Fair. The dealer had a great number of items of absolutely great quality, some really top items, all them spanning from Ming to Kangxi, but unfortunately we have been preceded by Chinese buyers who had already bought everything except the damaged items. Clearly, the items were belonging from a single great collection (from Milano), that has been then dispersed.
