C1 A “Five roosters” snuff jarlet

SKU: C1 Category:

Description

Description: Chinese snuff jarlet, or scent jarlet converted to snuff. Of squat cylindrical shape with flat wide lip, decorated with five roosters in underglaze copper red and cobalt blue. Roosters are symbol of high rank because of its crown, and also a symbol of the rising Sun. The underglaze copper, notoriously difficult to fire, has been masterfully fired here to obtain various shades of brown and other colors to represent the feathers. There is a touch of underglaze cobalt blue near the eye of the roosters. See details in the last image.

Mark: There is a not identified flower as mark.

Dating: First half of 19th century

Material: Porcelain, decorated under glaze. Thin body, fully glazed inside.

Size: 40 mm high

Stopper: Black glass or stone stopper carved with a coiled Qilin. Bone spoon. Probably all original.

Provenance: Bought in 1969 at a jewelry shop in Piacenza

Notes: This is my first purchase ever of a Chinese object. As such, it gave birth to the name of the Collection.  At the time I saw it in the display window of a jewelry shop, I didn’t know for what it was meant; nevertheless understood, although I don’t know why, that it was Chinese, and was captured by it.
