T43 An extremely rare “Excitement at fishing” kraak plate, Wanli, Ming Dynasty

SKU: T43 Category:

Description

Description:   Chinese very rare porcelain kraak plate bearing an exceptional decoration of two fisherman on a boat. While one of them is rowing, the other is standing, showing excitement for the fish that has just taken the hook. What is remarkable on this plate is the three-dimensionality of the scene. In fact, the scene is seen from the shore in the foreground, where there are lake plants and a moored boat. The two ducks flying over the surface of the water towards the boat with the two fishermen are giving depth to the scene. A kraak plate with a fisherman who is about to remove a fish from his line, but standing on a river plank instead of a boat, is described by Teresa Canepa at pages 195-197 of “Jingdezhen to the World – The Lurie collection of Chinese export porcelain from the late Ming dynasty”. In the description, the Author say that the scene is extremely rare on kraak porcelain. Both plates must belong from the same kiln, judging by the pose and dress of the fisherman, but the painting quality of this dish is finer in our opinion.

Dating:  17th century, Wanli, Ming dynasty.

Size:  26.3 cm diameter

Provenance:  Antiquarian market. See Provenance of the bowl T37.

References:  See “Jingdezhen to the World – The Lurie collection of Chinese export porcelain from the late Ming dynasty” by Teresa Canepa at pages 195-197 for a dish with a related scene, most probably painted by the same hand, although the scene on our plate is more engaging.
