Y2 A squat round Yixing teapot

SKU: Y2 Category:

Description

Description:  Chinese Yixing teapot of compressed round form. It bears a mark with an inscription at the base, plus a small mark under the handle and under the lid. The seal mark reads Zhou Gui Zhen 周桂珍, and the one under the lid reads Gui Zhen 桂珍. The left column inscription reads 1958 year, and the next one reads GuiZhen ShouZhi – 桂珍手製, hand made by GuiZhen. The inscription across the top of the seal reads Yuan Kuang Da Hong Pao 原礦大紅袍. The DaHongPao is a very expensive and rare oolong tea from the WuYi mountain area. Yuan Kuang could be interpreted as something like ‘original source’.

The right hand column inscription reads Jing Zhou zhi tu 景舟之徒 – disciple of Jing Zhou. Gu Jing Zhou was a very famous YiXing master. Because the part of the inscription that refers to the DaHongPao tea in both cases is a metal stamp, this pot might have been part of a commission by the people behind the tea as some form of promotion.
