QBW22 A “Carp’ water dropper, Korea, Joseon Dynasty

SKU: QBW22 Category:

Description

Description:   A porcelain water dropper for the Scholar’s desk, shaped as a carp. This item is an exception in our collection, being it Korean and not Chinese. The fact is that, besides today’s difficulty in finding antique and good quality objects for the Scholar’s desk, we were captured by this water dropper because of its vivid cobalt blue (of the same type of the best Chinese blue), because of its marvelous patina and its rarity. The shaping  of the head of the fish is recalling the Lingzhi.

Dating:  First half of 19th century, see the Notes here below.

Size:  75 – 80 mm diameter

Provenance:  Antiquarian market

References:  The last pictures are showing two references, one at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and one at The Met, the Metropolitan Art Museum, New York. This last one has been exhibited several times.

Notes:   The very last picture is showing a direct comparison of our water dropper and the two references, which are of similar size. We can appreciate the qualitative difference of the cobalt blue, which is one of the reasons, besides the well molding and the patina, that are pointing in our opinion toward the dating provided, first half of 19th century rather than the second half.
