SKU: S19 Category:

Description

Description:  Chinese snuff bottle of pure white jade. This jade of exceptional quality has been carved in the form of a natural eggplant, with gnarled stem wrapped around its calix, and leaves carved in subtle, delicate low relief. A longhorn beetle (a Coleoptera of the Cerambycidae family) with spotted elytra resting on it.

Foot/base:

Mark:

Dating:  18th Century, probably Palace Workshop.

Material:  Pure white jade

Size:  64 mm long

Stopper:  Coral stopper shaped with leaves, with special “double faces” ivory spoon. The spoon is concave on both sides.

Provenance:  Mario Dalmazzo collection

References:  See in the last two pictures similar bottles sold by Sotheby’s and Bonhams. In those pictures the longhorn beetles has been encircled for better locating them, due to the low contrast related with the nature of the material.

Notes:  About Mario Dalmazzo collection, see Provenance of the ceramic snuff bottle C8.

It is worth to note that this bottle and both the only two reference bottles are sharing the detail of the longhorn beetle.  And all them in pure white jade. There should be a reason for that, which probably is pointing toward a Palace Workshop manufacture. A last picture of this bottle is showing the detail of the spotted elytra.
